Each day brings curveballs; spilled coffee, unplanned meetings, spoiled lunch, flat tires, and the list goes on… It’s easy to let these emotions of negativity consume us and feel like there’s no way out… Take note of these 4 ways below to kick the toxic vibes to the curb:

1. Have a plan in place.

You can’t control anything outside of yourself—you can only prepare yourself for what’s to come. If you’re worried about the future, plan for the worst-case scenario. What would you actually do in the event that your fears are realized? This can feel a little weird, but when you know what actions you’ll take, you can start to trust that you’ll be able to rise to the occasion.

2. Minimize reading and watching negative news.

There’s nothing wrong with keeping up with current events or your favorite show on Netflix, but be conscious of the type of media you’re ingesting. Lots of negativity will fill your mind with worry and make you see the world as a dangerous, evil place. Positive, inspiring stories will allow you to focus more on the good in the world. You choose what you allow into your mind.

3. Talk or write it out.

Worry stems from perception. When you overanalyze what you’re worrying about, your mind can go deeper and deeper into a dark spiral that’s hard to get out of on your own. Writing it down or talking it out with someone you trust will help you access new, more solution-oriented perspectives.

4. Pay attention to what you can control.

Whether you’re worrying about something you said, what someone is thinking about you, or what could happen in the future, you are placing all of your attention on things that you absolutely cannot control and putting unnecessary stress on your nervous system in the process.

Lie on your back with your knees up and feet flat on the floor hip-distance apart. Let your arms rest by your sides as you lift your hips toward the ceiling. Tuck your tailbone slightly, and draw your belly button in toward your spine.

Once you feel comfortable, interlace your fingers underneath you and gently wiggle to move your elbows and shoulders together, opening your chest. Press down with your hands and feet to increase the lift. Hold 5–15 breaths, then release. Repeat 3–5 times.

This pose allows more space to be created in your chest, allowing the ability for more oxygen to flow. This then allows your heart and blood pressure a chance to slow down and not work so hard.

Mindfulness On A Whole New Level

There is something soothing about being in touch with yourself and the wellbeing of your mind. Being aware of what your feeling and thinking and how these emotions effect your day to day life. These Practices below will give you a boost inside your mind on a whole new level:

Mind Game #1: Think About Your Mind

The first mind game is easy … so easy, in fact, that you might initially think it’s silly. The game is simply to think about your mind. For the next 24 hours, try to think about your mind, as often as possible. Keep track of how many times you think about your mind, and award yourself an “awareness point” each time you remember to do it.

Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of this mind game. While it seems ridiculously easy, it can be very difficult to keep playing for more than an hour. The reason is we get lost in the mind—we forget. The trick is to keep playing, for a full 24 hours.

At the end of the day, write down your score—your total awareness points—on a piece of paper, and move on to the next game. Try to top each score the next day. That’ll be a solid measure of your progress.

Mind Game #2: Get Into the Balcony

Imagine yourself sitting in a theater balcony. Your mind is on a stage below, illuminated by bright lights. You’re the audience. Your mind is the spectacle. You’re observing it from a higher perspective.

Psychologists tell us that visualizing concepts can help give us a sense of mastery over them. This mind game of sitting in the balcony” helps you visualize your mind from an elevated perspective.

For the next 24 hours, try to run through this visualization as often as possible. At the end of the day, write down your score. Next time, see if you can beat your personal record.

Mind Game #3: What Was My Mind Just Thinking?

The third mind game is simply to ask yourself, as often as possible, “What was I just thinking?”

You might be doing the dishes and thinking about some mistake you made when you were in your 20s. You say to yourself, “regret,” then award yourself an awareness point. At the end of the day, write down your total score.

With all these mind games, the trick is to “catch” your mind while it’s thinking, then immediately reward yourself with an awareness point. Like training anyone, the reward is important! In traditional meditation, we also try to notice when our mind wanders, but meditation leaves many people with a sense of failure: “I can’t keep my mind still.”

When the feeling of being overwhelmed washes over you, many peoples first reaction is to panic which clouds one’s mind to be rational. Doing these 8 things below, will help calm the mind and give you a clear sense of peace:

1) Prioritize.

You can be all and do all to everything and everyone. You just can’t. Make your list, choose your top 3 most important things, and put the rest on hold.

2) Write it all down.

Make a list and get it all out of your head. This helps clear out the clutter so you can think more clearly. When you write it all down, you can release all those pent-up thoughts so you can think more clearly.

3) Delegate.

Just because you CAN, doesn’t mean you SHOULD. I can do a lot of things that aren’t the best use of my time, so I delegate them to members of my team. It’s not always easy to do, but it’s important. Find someone with the skill set you need, and learn to hand stuff off to them.

4) Don’t try to get it all done now.

Your list is long. You feel like it all needs to be done TODAY, so you freeze and turn to Facebook instead. Go back to what we learned above about chunking and prioritizing. Not everything needs to get done right this minute, or even today, or even this week — even though you might feel like it does.

5) Choose your three MITs every day.

My best tool for staying focused is the MIT (Most Important Task). Each day, identify no more than three MITs for the day. These are the things that absolutely have to get done. Focus on them, and once those are done you can feel like you made real progress.

6) Clear the decks at the end of the day.

At the end of the day, clean up your desk. It might be tempting to just get up and walk away, but if your desk is a mess that’s how you’re going to feel in the morning. Do you really want to start your day with another mess? Make note of where you left off, identify what you’re going to start with in the morning, then put everything away.

1) Clean your home.

This is a great way to create space for new life to emerge and reinforce the idea that giving is a blessing. When you’re finished, you’ll feel lighter, and so will the energy in your home. Purify your space even further by burning sage or copal, or opening all the windows to let in the fresh air.

2) Disconnect from negativity.

Our thoughts affect our emotions, which then influence the choices we make. Think about how you feel when you walk into a room where everyone is happy and positive, and then consider how you feel when you’re surrounded by complaints and negativity. Emotions are contagious, so decide whose opinions you want to listen to and drop the rest. Carefully pick films, books, and TV shows that lift your spirit, and tune out the negative ones this season.

3) Love Mother Nature.

Every culture, past and present, celebrates the natural beauty of spring with yearly rituals. In Rome, the lengthening of the day that followed the vernal (spring) equinox was marked by sacrifices to celebrate the death and rebirth of Attis—the god of vegetation. Goddesses of fertility—the Greeks’ Aphrodite, the Native Americans’ Spider woman, Mexico’s Tonantzin, Africa’s Oshun, Norway’s Freya, and Rome’s Flora—were all honored in the spring as well.

Outdoor rituals infuse the world with new energy, so go out and plant a tree, clean up your local park, or participate in a community garden.
